Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Assam's most rewarding wildlife destinations and can easily be visited as a day trip from Guwahati, located about 50 kilometres away.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, several nature resorts and lodges near the sanctuary offer the opportunity to spend a night amidst the tranquil countryside. Despite its relatively small size, Pobitora boasts one of the highest densities of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary may be much smaller than Kaziranga, but it offers one of the best opportunities in India to see the famous one-horned rhinoceros. Spread across a landscape of wetlands, grasslands, and marshes, the sanctuary is home to one of the highest densities of rhinos in the world. During our safari, sightings were frequent, with several rhinoceroses grazing peacefully in the open, often at remarkably close range.
The sanctuary is also rich in birdlife and supports a variety of other animals, including wild boar, deer, and numerous migratory birds. The combination of open grasslands and water bodies creates an ideal habitat for wildlife and makes game viewing relatively easy compared to many larger national parks.

Entering Pobitora on an Elephant
A group of six elephants carried us deep into the grasslands of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. At first, visibility was poor due to the morning mist, but as the light improved, the wildlife began to emerge from the tall grasses. By the end of the safari, we had spotted around fifteen of the sanctuary's magnificent one-horned rhinoceroses, often at surprisingly close range.

Guarantee Sighting of One-Horned Rhinoceros
Pobitora is renowned for having one of the highest densities of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world, making sightings almost guaranteed. Unlike many tiger reserves, where visitors can spend hours on bumpy jeep rides without seeing the elusive big cat, Pobitora offers a rewarding wildlife experience with frequent and memorable encounters. For anyone wishing to see the iconic Indian rhinoceros in its natural habitat, Pobitora is one of the best places in the country.

Baby elephant following its mother throughout the safari
One of the most memorable moments of our visit to Pobitora was watching a baby elephant faithfully follow its mother throughout the safari. While the mother carried tourists on her back through the grasslands, she remained constantly aware of her calf, ensuring it stayed close and safe at every step. The bond between them was heartwarming to witness and added a special touch to the experience. At the end of the safari, we offered bananas to both the mother and her calf, and watching them enjoy the treat was a delightful conclusion to a wonderful morning. It was a simple yet beautiful encounter that remains one of my fondest memories of Pobitora.
