The air here felt remarkably fresh and crisp. Every morning, the cool breeze carried the scent of pine forests and tea gardens, a refreshing contrast to the pollution and congestion of city life. Breathing deeply became a pleasure, and within a day, the noise and stress of urban living seemed like a distant memory.
A Stream Through the Homestay
One of the most charming features of Mud House Homestay is a narrow channel of crystal-clear water flowing right through the property. Fed by streams descending from the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountains, the water runs continuously, its gentle murmur providing a soothing soundtrack throughout the day.
PALPUNG SHERABLING MONASTERY
Palampur is surrounded by beautiful monasteries, ancient temples, charming churches, and sprawling tea gardens, making it an ideal base for exploration. After settling into our homestay, we began discovering the attractions around the valley, and our first stop was the magnificent Palpung Sherabling Monastery.
Located in Upper Bhattu near Baijnath, the monastery serves as the main seat of the Tai Situ Rinpoche and is one of the most important centres of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The grand prayer hall, with its magnificent gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, vibrant murals, and colourful silk-wrapped pillars, created a serene and deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Neugal Khad Suspension Bridge, Palampur
An outing to the Neugal Khad Bridge was a refreshing experience. This charming suspension bridge, locally known as a jhula bridge, spans the rocky bed of Neugal Khad and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the majestic Dhauladhar Range. As we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and mountain scenery, dark clouds gathered over the Dhauladhar peaks and soon rain began to fall, adding a dramatic touch to the landscape. The sight of mist and rain drifting across the mountains made the visit even more memorable and highlighted the ever-changing beauty of the Himalayas.
Bir Billing – A Day Among the Paragliders
We spent half a day at Billing, one of the world's most famous paragliding sites, watching colorful gliders soar gracefully above the valleys. The spectacle of pilots launching from the hillside and drifting effortlessly against the backdrop of the Dhauladhar Range was mesmerizing. Even without taking a flight ourselves, simply sitting and observing the endless dance of paragliders in the sky made for a relaxing and memorable experience. The cool mountain air, panoramic views, and sense of adventure all around created a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
Day trip to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Our visit to Namgyal Monastery in McLeod Ganj was a peaceful and uplifting experience. As we wandered through the monastery, the gentle sound of monks chanting, colourful prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and the serene atmosphere encouraged quiet reflection. Watching devotees spin the prayer wheels against the backdrop of the majestic Dhauladhar Mountains made it a wonderful experience.
HPCA Stadium – Cricket with a Himalayan Backdrop
A visit to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala was a delight, even though no match was being played. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cricket stadiums in the world, it is surrounded by the snow-capped Dhauladhar Mountains, creating a breathtaking setting unlike any other.

A Lesson from the Himalayas
The beauty around me was breathtaking, and the Himalayas stood in a league of their own—more majestic than any mountain range I have seen. Yet, I wondered why I had so often dreamed of the European Alps. For a moment, I felt as though I owed an apology to the magnificent landscape surrounding me. Then, in the silence of the mountains, it was as if nature whispered:
"You don't have to leave home to find your sanctuary; you only have to learn how to be still."
That single thought stayed with me long after I left Palampur, reminding me that the greatest journeys are not to distant lands, but to a deeper appreciation of what we already have.
