Kutaisi
A City With Old-World Charm
Kutaisi felt calmer and more relaxed compared to the energy of Tbilisi, yet it carried its own old-world charm. One of the oldest cities in Georgia, Kutaisi is filled with tree-lined streets, historic churches, lively local markets and a slower pace of life. Walking around the town, crossing the Rioni River and watching everyday life unfold gave us a more authentic glimpse into Georgia beyond the tourist trail.

KUTAISI
A City Along The Silk Road

Walking Through Silk Road History
Walking through the town, we could still sense echoes of that historic past in its old streets, bustling markets and timeless atmosphere. Every corner reflected centuries of cultural exchange between Europe and Asia.
Unlike the fast pace of modern cities, Kutaisi felt calm and authentic, allowing us to slow down and appreciate the rhythm of everyday Georgian life along one of history's most important trade routes.
Kutaisi may once have welcomed Silk Road caravans — today it welcomes travellers seeking Georgia's timeless soul.

An Evening at State Drama Theatre

Our Experience
One of our most memorable moments in Kutaisi happened outside the beautiful Lado Meskhishvili State Drama Theatre in the town's central square. While we were taking photographs of the impressive building, we were unexpectedly invited inside to watch a Georgian play free of charge, probably because we were tourists.
Even though we could not understand the language, we thoroughly enjoyed the performance, the atmosphere and the emotions on stage. It was a small gesture, but one that perfectly reflected the warmth and kindness we experienced throughout Georgia.

One unexpected invitation became one of the most unforgettable memories of our journey through Georgia.
Motsameta Monastery A Hidden Retreat Surrounded by Nature
Tucked away in the hills near Kutaisi, Motsameta Monastery felt like a hidden retreat surrounded by nature. Perched dramatically above a deep green gorge, the monastery offered breathtaking views and a sense of peace that was hard to describe.

Standing on the edge of the gorge, surrounded by endless forests and fresh mountain air, we couldn't help but pause and admire the breathtaking scenery. The silence, broken only by birdsong and the gentle breeze, created an atmosphere of complete tranquillity.
It was one of those rare places where history and nature exist in perfect harmony, making Motsameta Monastery feel less like a tourist attraction and more like a peaceful sanctuary hidden deep within the Georgian countryside.

A Place Worth Slowing Down For
Far from the crowds, Motsameta Monastery reminded us that some of the most memorable travel experiences are found in the quietest places. Surrounded by forests, history and breathtaking views, it became one of our favourite stops in Georgia.
Crawling Through: A Small Passage At Motsameta Monastery
At Motsameta Monastery, visitors traditionally crawl through a small stone passage near the shrine as a symbol of faith, humility, and prayer. The ritual is believed to bring blessings and fulfil wishes. During our visit, My wife also crawled through the narrow tunnel and quietly prayed for the well-being of the family. It was a simple yet deeply emotional moment that added a personal and spiritual touch to our experience at this peaceful monastery in Georgia.

BagratiCathedral
Overlooking Kutaisi from a hilltop, Bagrati Cathedral stands as a proud symbol of Georgia's history and resilience.
The cathedral's grand architecture, peaceful surroundings, and panoramic views over the city made it a wonderful place to pause and absorb the atmosphere.
A timeless monument overlooking Kutaisi from above.

Trying Chikhirtma & Kubdari
One meal that we thoroughly enjoyed in Georgia included two delicious traditional dishes — Chikhirtma and Kubdari. Chikhirtma, a comforting Georgian chicken soup thickened with eggs and flavoured with herbs and a slight tanginess from lemon or vinegar, felt warm and soothing after a long day of travel.
Alongside it, we tried Kubdari, a hearty savoury pastry filled with spiced meat, fresh from the oven and full of flavour. Together, the meal gave us another memorable glimpse into the richness and warmth of Georgian cuisine.
