UPLISTSIKHE CAVE CITY
Perched high on a sandstone cliff overlooking the rushing waters of the Mtkvari River, Uplistsikhe is easily one of the most surreal places I have ever explored in Georgia. Walking through this ancient, sun-baked rock-hewn town feels exactly like stepping onto a sprawling, prehistoric movie set. It is hard to wrap your mind around the fact that people were carving out these massive caves, grand halls, and intricate living spaces by hand more than 3,000 years ago, long before Christianity even reached the region.

Cave City Which Will Impress
The highlight of the trek is definitely the Tamaris Darbazi, a colossal rock-cut hall complete with stone pillars and a beautifully carved ceiling meant to mimic wooden beams. As you wander deeper into the complex, you will stumble upon ancient wine presses, a stone amphitheater, a centuries-old pharmacy, and a massive 10th-century basilica sitting right on top of a pagan sun temple. If you are feeling adventurous, do not miss the dark, secret escape tunnel that winds its way all the way down to the river bank.

Be Well Prepared As There Is No Shade
Because the entire site is completely open to the elements with zero shade, visiting during the spring or autumn is ideal. Wear sturdy shoes with excellent grip because the sandstone rocks can become slippery. Carry plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and consider hiring a local guide at the entrance to better understand the remarkable history carved into these ancient cliffs.
Silk Route & Uplistsikhe
Standing on the windswept cliffs of Uplistsikhe, it is hard to believe that this silent, sun-bleached labyrinth of stone was once a roaring, chaotic heart of the ancient Silk Road. Carved directly into the rocky plateaus above the Mtkvari River, this Georgian cave city served as a vital sanctuary for merchant caravans carrying luxury silks, exotic spices, and precious metals between Europe and Asia. Walking through the hollowed-out amphitheaters, ancient pharmacies, and massive wine cellars today feels like stepping into a forgotten fantasy world. It is a powerful reminder that the Silk Road wasn't just a network of trade routes—it was a meeting point of human ambition, where travelers from distant empires shared stories, cultures, and ideas that shaped our history.

Kharcho
Must Try
One Georgian dish that we truly enjoyed was Kharcho, a traditional chicken soup-stew made with tender chicken, walnuts, aromatic spices, garlic and a slightly tangy plum sauce. It had a wonderfully hearty taste after a long day of travel. Georgian cuisine surprised us many times during the journey, and Kharcho was definitely one of our most memorable discoveries.
“After a long day in the sun, enjoying Kharcho with fresh local bread.”
