Switzerland of Armenia
Dilijan, often called the “Switzerland of Armenia,” is one of the most beautiful towns in the country, surrounded by dense forests, rolling mountains, and fresh mountain air that create an atmosphere of complete calm. Walking through its quiet streets and traditional wooden houses felt very different from the grand cities of the Silk Route, yet the town carries its own deep historical importance. Located along ancient trade and travel corridors through the Caucasus, the region around Dilijan once connected merchants and travellers moving between Persia, Central Asia, and Europe, making it part of the wider Silk Road network.
Personally, I found Dilijan to be one of the most relaxing and picturesque places on our journey. The surrounding landscapes, monasteries, and peaceful atmosphere give the town a timeless quality, where history feels gently woven into nature rather than displayed through monuments alone. It is a quieter Silk Route experience, but one filled with charm, beauty, and cultural depth.
Haghartsin Monastery
Elegant and Beautiful
Haghartsin Monastery is a peaceful and beautiful places we visited in Armenia, hidden deep within the forests near Dilijan. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, the monastery complex reflects the elegance and simplicity of medieval Armenian architecture, with its ancient stone churches blending naturally into the surrounding landscape. The quiet atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and dense greenery create a sense of calm that makes the visit feel almost timeless.
Once an important spiritual and educational centre, Haghartsin Monastery still carries a deep sense of history and devotion. Personally, I found it to be far more than just a historical monument—it felt like a place for reflection, where nature and spirituality exist in perfect harmony.

A Climb Worth Every Step
Our minibus dropped us near a small bridge, from where the real journey to Haghartsin Monastery began. The uphill walk was much steeper than I had expected, and by the time we reached the monastery, I was completely exhausted.
But the moment the beautiful stone churches emerged from the dense forest, all the fatigue seemed to disappear. The peaceful surroundings, cool mountain air, and timeless beauty of Haghartsin made every step worthwhile.
As a perfect ending to the visit, we stopped at the monastery bakery and enjoyed some delicious freshly baked local treats. After that, the tired body no longer mattered—only the memories of a truly special place remained.
Goshavank Monastery
Worth Visiting
Goshavank Monastery is a beautiful and atmospheric Monastery we visited in Armenia. Surrounded by the forested hills near Dilijan, the monastery carries a deep sense of peace and history that immediately stands out. Founded in the 12th century by the scholar and priest Mkhitar Gosh, it once served as an important centre of learning, religion, and culture in medieval Armenia, and even today the site feels intellectually and spiritually rich.
Goshavank Monastery
Remarkable Khachkars
What impressed me most were the intricate stone carvings and the remarkable khachkars (cross-stones), which showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship of Armenian medieval art.
Walking through the monastery complex, surrounded by mountains and silence, felt like stepping into another era where faith, scholarship, and nature existed in harmony. Goshavank Monastery is truly one of Armenia’s architectural treasures.
